"Alvar Aalto and the International Style" by Paul David Pearson. Copyright 1978. Published by the Whitney Library of Design, New York. State First Printing. Profusely illustrated with architectural drawings and 350 black and white photographs. From the dust jacket:

Alvar Aalto, an early modernist, independently interpreted modern forms "in very sensitive, human terms. Although his heritage is being carried on by those he worked with and personally influenced, he left no written legacy of his design philosophy. This timely critical study fills that void by analyzing for the first time Aalto's personal form of expression as the last great leader of 20th-century architecture. This book concentrates on Aalto's formative years when he was in the process of developing many of his major themes...While a detailed analysis of Aalto's later years is still in preparation, a brief summary of his prolific contribution to modern architecture until his death in 1976 is included in the Epilogue. Aalto's observance of technical principals in the areas of ventilation, heating, lighting, acoustics, solar orientation, as well as his understanding for people's feelings were probably not rivaled by any architect in the 20th century, except for F.L.Wright. His particular way of dealing with the technical side of these considerations often led to an unorthodox collection of forms: the result was an architectural expression very different fromt that of the work of his contemporaries."
