Lovely screw back earrings with large Dragon's Breath cabochons. The settings test as silver, somewhere in the 800- 925 range.

Mid-century, beautifully made, with the 1940's era screw backs, which were either added when they were converted from a different style at some point, or were added as part of a production line when the fronts were made. This would not have been uncommon in the Mexican SIlver Tallers (shops) in the 1940's. The artisans made the 'showpiece' and then the items were made into various things. These might have just as easily been made into rings, bracelets, pendants, etc.

The 'stones' in these pieces, made of glass, are what is referred to as "Dragon's Breath." They not the most common item, and were probably made in Bohemia, in the early 30's or 40's. It is a difficult and expensive process to make these, and the old ones have a beauty that newer pieces fail to imitate. The glass is delicate, easily damaged, and not many pieces survive in pristine condition.

The colors are a fiery, opalescent magenta, with overtones of orange, vivid purple and red. When the light hits each stone, there is that wonderful "Dragon's Breath" opalescent effect. The back of the stone was made with a texture, which allows the light to reflect very well,

These stones were made to mimic expensive Jelly opal, which is rare, fragile, and expensive. Many people bought Dragon's Breath glass, thinking it was a genuine stone, and many still think that "Dragon's Breath" is a form of opal- it isn't, but this glass can stand as an art form all on it's own. The beauty of these pieces is amazing, and a matched set in this condition is very rare.

If one wished, these could be converted to a lovely pair of pierced earrings. We thought about doing that ourselves, but we just have a difficult time altering jewelry that is in such good condition.

These will be gift boxed, in either a white cardboard box or a vintage box. If you have a preference, please put it in the buyer's notes.
