Antique Leather Collectible Book 1683 Histoire de la Ligue Spanish Royal Library Owned Very Rare Volume Museum Grade Tome DanPickedMinerals

The provenance of this book is exciting;

Spanish Royal Library and potential Papal affiliation.

It was once in the royal library of Spain as the first bookplate (3rd photo) on the left is from the Spanish monarchy. It was later gifted to another royal family which shows on the smaller fontice tag on the right.
It was last part of the now liquidated estate of a known princess that spent her last years in the Denver area. Her grandfather had amassed a large, quality book collection during the late 1800's which she then inherited and owned all of her life. I acquired it about 5 years ago.

The spine of the book says "JBC" for Jean Baptiste Colbert.
In 1682, Colbert took much interest in art and literature. He possessed a remarkably fine private library, which he delighted to fill with valuable manuscripts from every part of Europe and the Near East where France had placed a consul. He employed Pierre de Carcavi and Étienne Baluze as librarians. Colbert's grandson sold the manuscript collection in 1732 to the Bibliothèque Royale.

Handwritten signature on the title page. (looks dated 1692?)
The signature is that of the Marquis de Seiguelai. who was a man with money and power in his time.

The smaller book plate is very exciting as well.
The inscription is Italian;
Per servire s'acquista. Servi quando poi. "Through serving one gains. Serve when thou can".

What is especially exciting is the keys below the crown.
Crossed keys are a Papal symbol - Angels on each side
The keys being a symbol of the Papacy (additional research is warranted.)
The Papal symbol would be used by a pope or as part of the personal crest of the family the man who became pope came from.

The Snake on the covers may be Medici (snake poison).
