AN UNUSUAL REPOUSEE METAL LEAF SHAPED ANGLO INDIAN HAIR COMB WITH RHINESTONE TRIM AND DANGLES

PLEASE NOTE THAT WE SHIP FROM THE UNITED KINGDOM

This sale is for an unusual repousee metal hair comb in the form of a leaf.

CONDITION: good vintage condition

SIZE: 7½ x 3½ ins. (19 x 9 cms)

This unusual comb takes the form of an upstanding leaf which can be seen from all angles like an aigrette.

An aigrette is an upstanding type of hair ornament, often with additional feathers, and usually worn in the evening. The ornament stood up proud from the top of the hairdressing, and gave the wearer both dignity and height.

The leaf is further embellished with a line of clear rhinestones down the centre. From the outer extremity falls a fringe of small metal drops which tremble and catch the light.

The final picture is taken from a contemporary Victorian cabinet photo and shows how large assymetric combs like these were worn so as to be visible from every angle. The picture on the mannequin shows a typical late 19th century hairdressing where the comb is placed to show the effect.

MORE INFORMATION:

The style is what we now call Anglo Indian because it was probably made in the Indian sub continent in the late 19th or early 20th century for the European market.

With India as part of the British Empire, the interaction of the Indian population with their British rulers led to an art form, which was a mixture of styles. In the 1870s Queen Victoria became Empress of India and this led to an influx into Europe of ornaments made in India for the Western market. Objects produced under the Anglo Indian influence were not the kind which the indigenous population themselves would have used. Nevertheless they showed elements of what was considered an Indian style, carefully adapted to suit European tastes.
