Have you ever seen one of these before? This is a vintage soap powder holder! Found on the counters of most 1930s and 40s kitchens, soap powder holders were decorative as well as useful. Dishes were washed by hand with soap flakes or powder so these items kept the soap close at hand in a pretty container. These handmade dispensers were probably the handiwork of kids in wood shop class or dads tinkering in their basement workshops.

Primitive folk art containers like these can be very hard to find. This relic is straight out of my personal collection. It is made from wood and has a creamy white handle, spout and bottom edge. It sports a dark orange background and a vintage decal of swans on both sides in shades of yellow, blue, peach and green. The lid has a clear glass knob and lifts off to reveal a little bit of soap powder residue inside.

This dispenser is in very good condition with minor wear. It measures 8 inches high, 3.25 inches wide and 7.5 inches long from spout to handle.
