I have always been fascinated with labyrinths, and a couple of years ago I read a book about them with my book club. At the book club meeting, someone brought a set of basic instructions to draw a 7-circuit labyrinth, and now I have transferred that knowledge to my hand-built pottery. This piece can be used for a multitude of purposes, but is especially designed as a meditative tool - trace the labyrinth path with your finger or a chopstick, and get lost in its wonders.

I rolled and flattened a slab of clay and used a small plastic bowl to create the basic form. After the initial firing, I drew the labyrinth pattern onto it with a pencil, which burns off during the final firing. I used the pencil drawing as a template and hand-painted over it with an underglaze, then painted Transparent on top of that, for a glossy finish in the center.

The brown glaze above the design and on the outside of the bowl features a matte finish, which contrasts nicely with the smoothness of the labyrinth area.

Dimensions: approximately 7.5 inches in diameter on the top edge, between .75 and 1 inches in height, and the base measures 5 inches.

This stoneware piece was fired to bisque hardness, glazed, and then fired to cone 5. It is completely food-and-dishwasher-safe, but should not be used in the microwave or oven. The bottom has my initials and "12" stamped into it. The underside is unglazed, and while it is fairly smooth, care should be taken when placing the bowl on delicate surfaces.
