A beautiful pair of hand carved Foo Dogs. Both the male and female are here and in Feng Shui they represent yin/yang energy. These are used to guard the house from bad chi.
. The male lion has its right front paw on an embroidered ball called a "xiù qiú" (绣球), which is sometimes carved with a geometric pattern known in the West as the "Flower of life" The female is essentially identical, but has a cub under the closer (left) paw to the male, representing the cycle of life. Symbolically, the female fu lion protects those dwelling inside, while the male guards the structure.
Both lions have a single large pearl in each of their partially opened mouths. The pearl is carved so that it can roll about in the lion's mouth but sized just large enough so that it can never be removed.
These lions do not have a makers mark but the great skill the artist possessed is evident in the rendering of the baby at the mothers feet.
These lions are old and both have cracks along one side of their heads.(pic 5) This in no way detracts from the beauty of these lovely objects. Foo Lions are excellent wedding or house warming gifts.
They are quite heavy and substantial pieces.
6.5" tall
6" long
4.5" wide
