I originally designed this Christmas sampler as loose elements that could be stitched as individual Christmas decorations. Whilst working on it, I enjoyed presenting them in an attractive way - much like old Quaker samplers. I think they'd look great stitched as tree ornaments, or as little ornate pin-cushions. And with 37 elements, there's plenty to pick from!

Most of the elements featured here are either original or interpretations from elements found on antique samplers from Germany, The Netherlands, Scandinavia and even South America.

"Through The Bitter Frost and Snow" is an original seasonal song from an album by the same title by the Irish singer/songwriter Susan McKeown. I cannot recommend this album highly enough - it makes great listening material whilst stitching these patterns with a hot cup of coco by your side!

If you were to stitch this pattern in its entirety, it would measure 364 by 192 stitches – embroidered on 32-count linen it would measure approximately 23 by 12 inches (58 by 30cm).

This booklet contains 7 pages (A4) with an introduction and 38 patterns spread over 4 pages. You will find that the size of the printed patterns are clear and easy to use. If you prefer working from the screen, please note that the PDF can zoom up to 800% without loss in detail!

Though I designed the patterns for cross-stitch, they definitely aren’t restricted to this medium only. I think these individual elements would look great on a woven rug, and would be very suitable for Fair Isle knitwear too!

Be creative, and enjoy working on your project. I’d love to see the end result of your work!
