KRSNA Book # 5
©1997, Elen Freelander
All rights reserved.

This is a carousel book, first edition, consisting of one book (an edition of one is essentially a one-of-a-kind piece). The carousel is a variation of the accordion or fold book, which folds flat when shut and opens out into a 3-dimensional star shape when viewed from above. The covers are 2-ply matte board covered with black Nepalese handmade paper on the outsides, with the title page being the front and the colophon page being the back. The hand lettering on the front and back covers is done in silver metallic marker. The rest of the book is pictorial only, and is composed of three layers of collage in each of five left & right-page spreads which function a 3-D vignettes. The collages were cut and assembled by hand and then photocopied onto UV Ultra-II Translucent printing paper, heavyweight. Each left & right-page spread illustrates a different time, aspect or activity in Lord Krishna’s Life. Each background is the same, giving the book visual continuity and indicating that all aspects of Godhead spring from the same source. The first scene shows Krishna as a baby with his guardian beasts, playing with a butterfly, symbolic of the transcendence of form and continuity within change. In the second scene Krishna is a boy with his flute in a meadow, surrounded by his four-footed grazing friends. The third scene shows him as a young adult in his four-armed form, dancing with people of all ages and cultures. Although each dances differently, all are united in the universal dance. In the fourth scene he keeps company with the gopis, young and old, making sure that each one knows and accepts her own unique inner beauty, thereby achieving peace. In the fifth and final scene he is at rest with his consort, Radha, in their beautiful garden in Vrndavan.

Dimensions: 5 x 5 x 3\/16” when closed, 10” in diameter when opened
