Small Coptic bound book with natural linen covers embellished with brass findings

This is a one of a kind book I made for you, or for that special person you know would love to have it. This book has the special feature of opening completely flat, so it’s easy to write or draw on regardless of what page you’re on. It’s much more relaxing to use a book that doesn’t try to shut you out like some basic store-bought notebook that has very little character to begin with. This here is not just unique, it’s also durable and made with the precision of a master bookbinder.

3.9"x4.8"x0.8" (9,8x12,2x2cm) / 96 pages of white acid free fine grain paper

This minimalistic journal suits people of many tastes. (Feel free to call it Scandinavian minimalism, the book is made in Finland!) It has just the necessary amount of unusual to be interesting and the high quality materials used make it a pleasure to handle. The covers are European unbleached linen embellished with antique brass and linen embroidery, the pages are bound together with waxed white linen thread and the paper suits all sorts of pens, pencils and other dry media.

This type of binding was first used by early Christians, the Copts (hence the name), in the first centuries AD. It is the first known codex style binding, a book that consists of folded sheets of paper bound together instead of, for example, simple loose sheets or of paper (or papyrus or parchment) rolled into a scroll. This binding technique isn’t just a quirky old way of making books – many modern bookbinding machines imitate this ingenious way of linking pages together – but a wonderful piece of living history.

Please note that due to differences in monitors your book may differ slightly in color from what you see on your screen. I do my absolute best to represent the colors as accurately as possible.
