Seller's description

This necklace features an antique 1870 coat button with a scrolling leaf and Calla Lily flower or possibly a hibiscus flower design. The Victorians loved all things botanical. Accented with vintage purple oval beads and colorful faceted Czech glass in shades of blue-green peacock and amethyst purple with decorative open lace antiqued brass. The button is in great condition for the age. I select only the best antique buttons with minimum wear.
Antique Button jewelry has become an ever-popular style in recent years. Button is circa 1870 to 1880's. This button was probably used on a lady's coat since it is a larger button at 1 1/4" inches round.

To preserve the original state as a valuable "Antique Button" the "Loop shank" is still intact.
Some jewelry artisans make the huge mistake of cutting off the loop shank and use glue to adhere the button to filigree. Once you do this, the expensive value of an antique "Button" is lost forever.
Necklace measures 19" inches long with an extra 2" inch extender chain at the clasp.
Entire drop from hand accent to bottom of the button is 4" inches long. Untouched patina.
Just lovely!

A bit of button buzz... (written content is IP © 1989 Donna Jameson. All Rights Reserved)
Many decades ago, Europeans furnished most of the buttons until almost the 19th century, but there is evidence that a few were made in this country as early as circa 1700.
By the early 1800's, buttons were being made everywhere. During the civil war, ladies would keepsake buttons from their dearly departed loved ones and fashion them into brooches and bracelets. Some buttons even played a role in the still ever popular Mourning Jewelry.
It is therefore understandable that people began to snip them off of clothing that was heading for the rag-bin. Ladies began collecting them with the expectation of using them again, sometimes out of sentiment, sometimes just because they were too pretty to throw away.
According to a web-search, Mrs. Gertrude Patterson was the first full-fledged button collector. During the 1930's depression, when nobody had two pennies to rub together, she was featured on a radio show called "Hobby Lobby" which spoke over the radio about inexpensive hobbies to cure boredom. Gertrude influenced her listeners so much that they too looked to the family button box as a source of an inexpensive hobby. Thanks to Gertrude, the idea swept the country and today, there are numerous dealers and collectors hunting for buttons and historical button societies. As with this beautiful work of art, you must certainly be grateful that it was rescued from the bottom of a dusty old cigar button box.
