beautiful vintage rug hooked panel for you to turn into a chair cushion or pillow

the true colors of this rug hooking are hard to photograph, but are closest to the first picture: the background is a warm brown and the pinks and greens are soft, with a few touches of violet here and there

the whole piece, from burlap to burlap measures 23 1/2" x 20" ~ the rug hooked piece measures 18" x 18"

excellent vintage condition

burlap is stamped with " Copyright 1952 by Pearl R. McGown Inc. West Boylston, Mass" and "An Original Design by Pearl McGown" and "587-3 Flower Prints - 18" square units - for a large or room-sized rug" (which makes me believe that this was a sample or kit that someone could do in prep for making a larger rug)

Pearl McGown was a superstar in the world of rug hooking ~ read this about her:

"The modern preference for using only cut wool strips in hooked rugs originated with Pearl McGowan in the 1930s, and may have saved the craft from disappearing in the United States. Mrs. McGown popularized strict guidelines for rug hooking and formalized its study. National Guild of the Pearl McGown Rug Hookcrafters: If you aren't new to the craft of rug hooking, you may have already heard of us, but if you are a new rug hooker, or just enjoy crafts, then come take a look at what Traditional Rug hooking is all about. On this site you will find links to the stores that sell supplies for rug hooking, and everything you will need for fine and primitive crafting. You will also find links to the McGown guilds and schools around the world. This site also contains an excellent history of Pearl McGown, who was born February 27, 1891 - and chronicles her contributions to this field. Felcher, Cecilia. The Complete Book of Rug Making: Folk Methods and Ethnic Designs. Hawthorne Books, Inc., New York, NY. 1975. Contains a chapter on hooked rugs, along with many other rugmaking techniques, and a chapter on dyeing. The chapter on hooked rugs introduces the use of hand hooks, punch hooks, and speed hooks, but doesn't discuss any of them thoroughly. Contains a number of charted designs which allow you to reproduce some antique and Pearl McGown designs . (see http://www.liveauctioneers.com/item/3058035 for more)
