Description

CHECK LIST BELOW BEFORE PURCHASING for list of phrases STILL AVAILABLE in the red orange color.** Some of the cards shown in photos HAVE SOLD! I have 3 cards in this red/orange color left. Have other colors listed in my shop also with other phrases.

These great old cards are lovely "just being" for the lover of old letterpress but are oh so perfect to use for clues for gifts for children or an adult for any occasion, like EASTER, birthday, scavenger hunt, etc.

****FYI: Don't miss creative IDEAS list below!****
This listing is for 1 vintage RED ORANGE sentence phrase flash type word card (list of sentences below) from the 1950s or possibly 1940s. They are on old sturdy card stock, (thicker than most card stock, like a thin cardboard) measuring a generous 5 5/16" long by 3 5/16" wide. (Have other colors in other listings) Letters used are in upper case and look to be similar to the French Clarendon style. The lettering and graphics are wonderful for the collector of vintage ephemera to repurpose, frame, use in vignette, ETC. The sentences are phrased as direction or clue cards so there is a boatload of ways to incorporate these, a starting list of ideas below! They come in different colors: red, green, red orange, blue, purple, & brown. They are listed in separate listings by color. (Last photo shows a brown card from another listing of these.)
~ This listing is for U Pick 1 card from list below. ~
Most colors have different phrases.
In the various lots of these cards they say things like" look in the drawer where mother keeps her spoons" or " look under the candy dish." Most all are objects still relevant today. Some are not which gives some clues to their age. If you were using them to lead someone to a surprise for Christmas or some other occasion, if you used one that said, " Look under the parlor table", part of the fun could be giving hints to help them figure out what the modern day equivalent of "parlor" is!
These looked old due to the patina of the paper, colors, and style of the border graphics. My guess would be 1950s, possibly 1940s. Some of the phrases lend a clue, like " Look under the hassock" or "Look in the bread box." When I researched "hassock" I found out it was a kind of fan that sat on the floor and moved air vertically in the room and it became very popular in the 1940s. Phrases like this, that aren't as relevant today, not only give further clues to age but are the ones from this batch that would be perfect for the collector of old ephemera or game pieces, as these went with a game. Perfect for decor in a bungalow from that era or for a "color splash" loving home!
Since I have a plethora of phrases, I am listing them in listings by color and you can pick the phrase you want from each listing. Lots of different phrases in the different listings! If you want more from one listing color, convo me so I can change price and reserve. I also can reserve and change shipping for discount if you are buying one from one color and one from another or you can check out and I can refund extra shipping thru Paypal if that is faster for you. Or convo me!

Here are the phrases available in RED ORANGE. Just put the one you want in the convo message with your purchase. As phrases are taken, I will omit before relisting. All cards have aged to a mellow shade of a cream. A few have slight signs of wear on corners or slight bends or some creasing but none are torn and I will note it by the phrase if the card has a greater amount of wear or damage than most. To find other shades of these cards, go to the ephemera section of my shop or search "sentence card" in my shop.
** ~ Here is the list of phrases available in the red orange ~ **
- Look under Mother's vacuum cleaner (mother's ??? no one else uses it??? LOL)
- Look under the magazine rack
- Look under the bath-room scale (larger creases, see middle card in 4th photo)

****NOW to the FUN part!**** IDEAS!
- Repurpose and use them to frame or in mixed media projects.
- Great stocking stuffer for graphic lover, designer, artist , printer or use to make a card or for the cover of a journal for them.
- Stocking stuffer or enclose in a card for the collector of old ephemera
- MOST FUN, in my humble opinion, use them as glues to direct people to presents, surprises for EASTER, Christmas, birthdays, anniversaries, just any surprise treat, etc. for children or adults! Place them in a stocking to be from SANTA to direct to a present. Keep and reuse year after year! Start a tradition with your family, grandchildren. You can use one or several and lead them on a hunt!
- Put them under the placemats at THANKSGIVING or any other dinner. After everyone is done eating, tell them about the cards, let card lead each of them to a place where you have hidden a treat or use them to award a "door prize" for one you will mark differently some how. Or you could ask, "Who has the one that says look in the spoon drawer?" You get the door prize!
- Use as "keep worthy" LG gift tags.
- Us them as placecards
- Use them for scavenger hunts at parties
- Put it beside a guest bed for the holidays to direct them to a treat or by the bed of a birthday person to see when they wake up!
- Use them for their intended purpose, to help children learn to read. Use one or a few of these old ones and mix in ones you will make yourself. Let there be a special treat everytime a child reaches a milestone, i.e. when he makes it to another old card!
- Use them as decor in your craft room, print shop, office, child's playroom or in a Christmas vignette as described below in the SPECIAL NOTE!

SPECIAL NOTE:
Last Christmas I made a wonderful Christmas Dept/General store vignette at my antique desk. I used vintage seals, cards, ribbons, gift wrap, candles, a dept store santa, etc to set up a display that made you feel you were back in time. It brought a nostalgia and comfort to my den. The glow of candle light at night made it even more cosy and charming! You could do this on a table, desk, shelf, a chair in a corner, etc. In SeaSeaRider, I have assembled some items that would work well for this. Search my shop for "general store". Recently listed items will be tagged with this but you also need to look in my vintage sections of Christmas Decor & Christmas Cards to see more choices. Check out several old Christmas signs I have listed! They would be perfect for this type vignette. How fun!!
I will do my best to combine SHIPPING on any multiple purchases, which can easily be done with these cards. Convo for rate or if you don't want to wait, check out and know I will do my best to refund thru Paypal. I am unable to put that automatically on my shipping rates since I carry such a wide range of items in my shop.
SeaSeaRider specializes in seashell/beach/nautical vintage and original art and home decor but also a variety of "other" inspired themes. As a sampling, I have old coral, shells, sea fans, seashell bookplates that make unique affordable art, ship themed items, books, bird & botanical bookplate prints, old wooden letterpress, sea-themed original & vintage jewelry, my handmade sea signs called "Sea Shingles", vintage Christmas & Valentines, etc.
Come on over for a mini vacation! Much to inspire you to decorate, create, or gifts for the hard to buy for vintage and/or ocean lover!
