Description

Looking for that perfect gift for the animal lover in your life? Or treat yourself to something special! DawgArt is pet portraiture in vivid color. Original artworks on canvas that capture the fun and sweet personalities of the companion animals that enrich our lives.

Now you can purchase a DawgArt gift certificate for that special someone. This gift certificate will entitle the recipient to one painting of their favorite pet.*

Gift certificate is 8.5x11 inches, totally customized, with a personal message from you, full color samples of artwork and instructions on how to complete the piece. Best of all, I can email the gift certificate to you, so that you can print it out. Perfect for last minute gifts, and the person who has everything. Nothing could be easier! (Hard copy gift certificates available for snail mail if you prefer.) After you complete this purchase, simply email (dawgart.info@gmail.com) or write to me here on Etsy and share the details of the personalized message. Make sure you include your name, Etsy name and name of the recipient, so I can keep track of your order.

The recipient will be in charge of completing the commission at their convenience. Once they have supplied me with suitable photo reference of their pet (any kind of animal), I will add their commission to the waiting list. When I begin work on their piece, I will use photos as reference to create an original paint on canvas work of art in bright, colorful hues. Finally, when the painting is finished, a time-elapsed video will be available on YouTube, showing the painting process. Commissioning is easy and fun!

If you don't want a gift certificate, but just want a painting for yourself, this listing works too! Just send me photos after your transaction and we'll set it up.

Details: Artwork will be 20x20* inches, 3/4" deep canvas, painted in acrylic, wired and ready to hang. The painting will wrap around the edges of the canvas, so it can hang unframed for a contemporary look. Since most DawgArt canvases are standard sizes, they can be easily framed by the recipient to match home decor, if that is the preference.

*20x20 canvas accommodates only ONE pet, emphasis on the head. See images for examples. Turn-around time for a portrait is usually only a couple of weeks, but can be much longer, depending on the waiting list. Once I receive photos, recipient will be notified of estimated completion time. Keep in mind that this is a custom painting, created to be unique and one-of-a-kind. If you have any questions, please message me or email me at dawgart.info [!at] gmail.com.

Sizes up to 36x48 available. Write me for more details.

All paper and canvas prints ship FREE in the continental United States.

During the holidays, paper prints will ship twice a week. Canvas prints will ship when they are completed, sent to the printers and picked up by me for delivery. For more details, please read shipping polices below.

For paper prints, shipments go out every Wednesday. Curious? Here's why:
Paper print orders are sent to be printed every Monday, picked up from the printers on Tuesday to be prepared for shipping and then shipped on Wednesday. This means that if you purchase something from DawgArt on Monday evening or Tuesday, it won't ship until Wednesday the following week. If you need something faster, change the shipping option from Standard Shipping to Priority Mail at checkout.

All 8x10 paper prints are shipped unmatted in 9x12 cardboard photo mailers to prevent bending. 11x14 prints and larger are shipped in cardboard tubes and are considered parcels by the USPS. All paper print parcels will be shipped First Class. Any orders over $36 will ship insured.

Canvas prints:
I will send your order to the printers as soon as I receive it. It will take 5-7 business days for your canvas print to process AT THE PRINTERS, before I even pick it up. I use a high-quality printer, so the extra time is time well spent. I will ship canvas prints as soon as I receive them from the printers. Canvas prints will ship USPS. If you want a canvas print to go faster, please change the shipping option from Standard Shipping to FedEX at checkout.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Question: Are your paintings made on a computer?

No. DawgArt is created traditionally from beginning to end. Subjects are painstakingly sketched out in graphite on a triple-primed canvas. They are then lovingly painted by hand in vivid color with brushes and acrylic paint. The result is a totally unique painting that captures the personality of your pet!

Question: Where did you learn how to paint like this?

As far as DawgArt goes, I am self-taught. I started creating DawgArt as a fluke in 2001. My next-door neighbor asked me to make a painting of her dog that matched her house. Her house was painted in every color of the rainbow! Since I was self-taught, I didn't really know what I was doing, so I just tried to swallow my uncertainty and paint. Each painting is created through an intuitive process. I put the sketched out canvas on my easel, squeeze color onto the canvas and just start painting with colors I feel good about. Since I do very little planning for each piece, aside from blocking out time, every painting is an experiment! I was accepted into the Illustration BFA program at Utah Valley University in spring of 2011. But my process for creating DawgArt hasn't changed.

Question: Why do you choose such crazy colors? Is this how you see the world?

Color has always been fascinating to me. Rainbows are my fave! I believe color, more than anything, can help communicate the soul of a thing. So I choose vivid color to express the happy, goofy, soulful and vibrant personalities that can be found in companion and wild animals.

Question: What inspires you?

I see beauty everywhere I look. The natural world, animals, people, art, music and literature all inspire me. The relationship that people have with their animals is also a beautiful thing to me.

Question: Can I get a painting of my pet done?

Yes! Simply message or email me and I can give you commission guidelines and a price list. The commission process is easy and fun! At the end of the process you will have beautiful artwork to add color and joy to your home.

Question: How much does it cost?

For a complete price list and commission guidelines, visit this link: http://dawgart.blogspot.com/p/commission-guidelines.html

Question: Do you paint from photos?

Yes. Photos taken outdoors, in good light, with no flash are best. They must be of a high enough quality that I can use them as reference. High resolution, good detail. If you have a photo of a pet that has crossed over the rainbow bridge, send it to me and I will let you know if it would work. All hard copy photos used in the commission process are returned with your finished painting. For examples of photos I like, please visit: http://dawgart.deviantart.com/favourites/.

Question: Why do your paintings cost so much more than your prints?

Prints are reproductions of actual paintings, they aren't original artworks themselves. When you buy a print from anyone, you are buying a picture of a painting. The painting itself is much more valuable and took much more time and effort to create. It is unreasonable to ask an artist to create an original painting for the same amount that you would expect to pay for a print.

Question: What is the difference between paper and canvas prints?

Paper prints are images printed on lustre photo paper, as described in each listing. Canvas prints are images giclee printed onto canvas and stretched over a wooden frame.

Question: I don't want to pay for a painting. If I send you a photo, will you paint it and add the image to your gallery so I can buy a print?

It's possible, but don't count on it. When I am between commissions, I will dip into my photo files for reference in the creation of paintings. I have thousands of photos in my files that I have chosen for future painting. If you have an amazing photo of your pet and think it would be stunning as a painting, feel free to send it to me. I might feel the same way! If you send me a photo with the purpose of having me add it to my files, the rights to the final painting belong to me, as do all my images.

Question: If I own a piece of DawgArt, do I also own the rights to reproduce that image?

No, you don't. I own the rights to my artwork, even if you paid me to make it. If you would like to reproduce my images in any way, you can contact me and we can discuss compensation. Of course, if you want to take pictures of your painting with your dog sitting next to it, hanging in your living room, etc., that is fine. I would love to see how you have displayed your DawgArt and will add it to my blog to show it off to other people!
