I recently renewed my home contents insurance and thought $25,000 should be enough... but maybe I should just double check. So I created these spreadsheets, went to each room in the house and recorded all of my possessions.. and ended up calculating I had about $35,000 worth of stuff!

These spreadsheets are also handy if you're moving out and want to make sure everything has arrived at the new place, or if you're looking to make some extra money hosting a garage sale or selling stuff online.

These spreadsheets were made in Microsoft Excel however you can open the spreadsheets in Google Sheets on your iPad or other portable device, and walk around your home populating the inventory of all your possessions as you go.

THESE SPREADSHEETS CAN BE USED FOR:

1. Insurance purposes
Calculate the amount of contents insurance cover you should take out. Most people under-insure their contents, with these spreadsheets you'll have a much better idea of the realistic value of your possessions.

If you ever did need to make an insurance claim you can simply provide a copy of this spreadsheet.

The spreadsheet would also provide a shopping list of all the things you need to buy / replace.

2. Moving
If you're moving houses, this detailed inventory ensures nothing is forgotten

3. Making extra money
By listing out everything you own you might find some things you forgot you actually had! This is a good spreadsheet to refer to for items to list for sale on eBay or other marketplace, before you host a garage sale or just for general de-cluttering

4. Dividing up assets
When a loved one passes away you'll be able to see all of the items and decide how to divide them amongst the family members or which items to sell and donate

5. Adult children
See which items you might want to gift to your kids when they move out… so you can upgrade and buy new + better versions

6. Forecasting future expenditure
Especially for the big ticket electronic items and appliances. You'll be able to keep track of warranties, and when these items are likely to need replacing

7. Share house
If you have roommates, each person has probably bought a few things here and there. When the lease ends or you choose to go your separate ways, avoid disagreements by keeping track of who owns what
