Description

This hand-pulled linocut illustrates the silver stars and silhouette of Sagittarius the Archer in an edition of eight prints, 7.6 inches by 7 inches (19.3 cm by 17.8 cm) on lovely, deep blue, handmade, Japanese kozo (or mulberry) paper. The word Sagittarius and symbol ♐ appear at the top of the image. The constellation Sagittarius can be drawn in a few different ways. This is one of the popular choices, which includes "The Teapot" within the upper body of the centaur and his bow.

You can find Sagittarius, the ninth constellation of the zodiac, between 234.75 and 270 degree of celestial longitude, which the Sun transits roughly from December 18 to January 18, though the traditional dates for the astrological sign are November 22 to December 21 each year. The Celestial Spare is an imaginary sphere around the Earth on which we map all the celestial bodies we see in the night sky. The ecliptic, shown as a dashed line, is then the line you would draw on the Celestial Sphere to map the apparent path of the Sun through the various constellations. Sagittarius is near the galactic centre, the densest part of our Milky Way, so it also contains several star clusters and nebulae, shown as circles in the print.

The constellation overhead at a person's birth was thought to provide insight into their character and fate. Well into the Renaissance, medical doctors were expected to be trained in astrology, as it was deemed an important diagnostic tool. That's why Copernicus, for instance, learned so much astronomy.
