Description

This ornate, filigree-like construction is made of snowflake-gears in different sizes and styles, laser-cut from cardboard and painted in a variety of cool metallic finishes. An aluminum wire coil lets you fasten this to the tip of your Christmas tree.

One blogger described this design as "elegant yet hardcore," which is a great way to summarize Steampunk in general. And since we wouldn't have Christmas as we know it without Charles Dickens and Queen Victoria, perhaps Christmas and Steampunk go together like Halloween and Gothic.

This tree topper is 12" from tip to tip and is perfect for a large tree.

CANCELLATION: Orders for non-custom items can be canceled before shipment, and your entire purchase price and shipping will be refunded in full to the original form of payment. My item descriptions include sizes, materials, and colors to accurately represent what you will receive. You can ask me about the items in my shop--or your dream custom commission--to make sure you understand what you will be getting: colors, sizes, materials, and quantities of items in sets. (Don't worry if it sounds like a silly question, because I'd rather answer a question before shipping your order than get an unhappy email later.)

I'll even send draft sketches or snapshots of work in progress as needed.

If you have a deadline, let me know, and I will make sure to ship in a timely manner or let you know I can't fill your order in time. (However, I can't guarantee the USPS or weather delays.) Please give me a deadline that includes any time you need to complete your project with my items. For example, if the wedding is on the 15th but you need 3-5 days to paint and assemble your unpainted cardboard gears, tell me you need the gears by the 10th, not the 14th.

So the only surprises you should get when you open the box are good ones!

If that isn't the case, please contact me as soon as possible (in any case, within 7 days of documented receipt of your order).

For items 13 ounces or less, I use USPS First Class Mail with upgrades available for USPS Priority Mail (2-4 business days). Items heavier than that are shipped USPS Priority Mail.

If you don't receive your order within a reasonable time after mailing, please check your tracking, in case it is at your local post office. I'll be happy to help you troubleshoot or replace your order if it has been lost in the mail.

In some cases, USPS scans items as delivered even though they will not be delivered that day. There also seems to be an increase in misdelivery to neighbors on some routes.

SHIPPING NOTIFICATIONS: Shipping notifications are automatically generated when I print your shipping label. If I print your label after 5 p.m. Pacific Time, USPS may not collect your package from the mail drop until 6 p.m. the next working day.

EXPECTED SHIP DATES: Shipping dates are calculated automatically based on estimated times in the shipping profile, not actual production time based on my order queue, stock levels, or customization. If you need something sooner, please Convo me before placing your order so I can see if it is possible to ship earlier. If you are traveling and don't want your package to arrive early, also Convo me about that.

PACKING: I pack all items thoroughly to avoid crushing or shifting in transit, as well as enclosing water-sensitive items in a plastic bag to protect from moisture.

RECEIVING PACKAGES: You are responsible for providing an accurate address and taking delivery of your items from the shipper (almost always USPS). Please schedule your shipments so you will be in town to accept them.

INSURANCE: I insure all orders over $25 that are shipped via First Class Mail. Priority Mail is automatically insured to $100 and larger orders will be insured for full value. If an item is lost or damaged in shipping, you agree to provide any documentation required for an insurance claim.

COMBINED SHIPPING: I'm still trying to get the hang of combined shipping calculators. If you order multiple items and the postage seems unreasonable, please Convo me and I will either set up a reserved listing for you with appropriate shipping or refund the excess shipping.

OVERNIGHT DOMESTIC SHIPPING: Please contact me BEFORE placing an order and requesting overnight shipping. I may not be able to assemble your order in time to ship, and in any case, I would need to invoice you for overnight shipping (minimum $50 via USPS). Overnight orders placed without prior authorization (and payment) will be canceled due to previous fraud attempts.

INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING: There have been many changes to international shipping. I typically ship First Class but can get quotes for Priority. A 7-ounce package (medium tree topper) will be at least $40 USD.

CUSTOMS: You are responsible for paying applicable Customs fees/duties and for knowing how long it takes for items to clear Customs in your country. If you order an item I can't legally ship to your country, I will notify you and cancel the order with a complete refund. I do not mark items as gifts or claim less than the purchase price to try to evade Customs duties, as this can lead to bigger problems. I can't take responsibility for timely release of orders from Customs, just shipping by the agreed-on date.

OTHER CARRIERS: I prefer USPS, but other carriers are available IF you request this service before placing your order. PARTS SALES: In the past, I have sold bulk shipments of cardboard gears to other Makers. However, as of November 1, 2013, this is only available February 1 to September 1, and turnaround time will be based on other schedule constraints such as vending events and wholesale orders of finished goods.

MATERIALS: My ornaments and toppers are made from upcycled corrugated cardboard shipping boxes, as documented in the listings. The surfaces of these materials vary, and corrugations may be visible. Ornaments and other decorative items usually have a front and back side, with construction and/or possible surface defects on the back. If you plan to hang your item where the back will be visible, please discuss this so I can make the back as visually appealing as possible given the methods of construction.

Items made from other materials, such as MDF or acrylic plastic, are also subject to having a front and back. Jewelry pieces will have a smooth back without etched decoration, and tree toppers will have hardware attached visibly. If you need a double-sided tree topper for a free-standing tree that is not against a wall, Convo me and we can do a custom listing.

CUSTOMIZATION: I am happy to substitute other colors of gears, ribbon, etc. at no extra charge for the same level (standard/premium). Most holiday decorations are made to order anyhow. However, if the alternate colors are not in stock, there may be a delay in production for painting; I will notify you if this is the case.

PRIVATE LISTINGS AND HOLDS: I am happy to make you a private listing to

However, private listings for stock items (i.e. a Steampunk Tree Topper in Warm Metallics) will only hold your unpaid listing for 24 hours between Thanksgiving and the Christmas shipping cutoff. This has been a logistical problem in past years and is not fair to other customers who are ready to pay.

COLOR MATCHING: I am happy to provide the brand and color of any paint I use, but I can't guarantee an exact match to paint applied over other materials and other primers. Color mixing is not available, except for flat-pack items that can be painted with house paint before laser-cutting (and will have a contrasting dark edge). Due to monitor variation etc. I can't guarantee exact colors of any item shown in photographs, whether in Etsy listings or in-progress snapshots.

RAIN DELAYS: If your order requires custom paint or I am out of stock during rainy weather, I may need to inform you of a production delay while waiting for good painting weather. Luckily, the San Jose area has mild winters and relatively little rain, and I can use a dehumidifier in the TechShop paint booth if wet weather continues.

MAXIMUM DIMENSIONS: Custom items can be laser-cut up to 18x24" on the standard laser cutters, although I also have access to a laser that cuts up to 20x32". Larger items can be cut on a CNC router up to 48x96". The maximum thickness on the laser cutter is 3/8", though solid materials such as MDF can be laminated together. The maximum thickness of cardboard is 3/16" because multi-layer corrugated cardboard catches fire easily. I do not recommend laminating cardboard, as the edges tend to curl.

ABOUT CARDBOARD ITEMS: Cardboard gears are laser-cut and spray painted and are likely to smell like spray paint and lightly-charred cardboard until they air out completely. Unpainted laser-cut parts will have a very distinctly barbequed odor. Chipboard smells downright nasty when laser-cut. Cardboard laser-cut items are not fireproof, waterproof or toddler-proof, but at least they won't shatter if your cats or toddlers knock them off the tree.

ABOUT ACRYLIC PLASTIC ITEMS: Acrylic jewelry is shatterproof but its finish is relatively delicate. Protect your jewelry from scratching against rough or metal objects, do not rub with paper towels, and do not clean with Windex (or other ammonia-based window cleaner). Eyeglass lens cleaner, Brillianize, and Novus #1 seem to work well without removing paint. Metallic and colored accents are added with various types of craft paints and should withstand a quick wash, but not ultrasonic cleaners or soaking. Scratched acrylic can be buffed with Novus #2 and non-scratch fabric.

WHOLESALE/CONSIGNMENT: If you are a retailer interested in carrying my finished work in your store, let's talk! However, if you are outside the SF Bay Area, I would prefer to sell wholesale than consignment due to logistics.

We take intellectual property concerns very seriously, but many of these problems can be resolved directly by the parties involved. We suggest contacting the seller directly to respectfully share your concerns.
