Handspun Nettle Hemp Linen Yarn Set: Viking Sewing Threads

Nettle yarn, hemp yarn, linen yarn. Perfect for reenactors, for hand-sewing viking clothes.

Entirely prepared by hand. I grow my flax and hemp, I obtain nettles from wild sites.

SET OF 5 YARNS:
1. Nettle, 2ply (two single threads spun together).- 3 METERS.
Nettle yarn is quite delicate, may be not the best for difficult sewing

2. hemp, 2ply - 6 METERS

3. linen, 2ply -6 METERS

4. linen single 15 METERS

5. linen single- 60 METERS

NOTICE: please be aware that all these threads are the work of my hands, I spin them on a spinning wheel, they will not always be perfectly the same


1. Nettle. Urtica dioica L.
It is not nepal nettle, or ramia, its wild nettle growing in Europe and USA.

Nettle grows wild in different positions, although it needs rich nutrient-rich soil to develop the best fiber.
Harvesting is carried out mainly in autumn, after flowering, it also allows collecting seeds.

Depending on the chosen method, the fiber will give the nettle green, sprinkled or dipped in water. After proper preparation of the plant, you can use the breaking device, or manually remove the fiber from the stalks. They should then be combed carefully and gently
Nettle can be spun on a spindle or spinning wheel

2. Hemp, Cannabis sativa L.
This fiber is preparat similar to linen fiber. In the period of maturity, the hemp is cut, retted, we separate the fiber, comb and spin.

3. Linen. Linum usitatissimum L.
I tear out ripe flax, then it needs to be retted, after that I separate the fiber, comb and spin

For all this activities I use old tools to break the stalks, comb the fibers
