Kuping Guling Pink Ceramic Tile

Description

The Balinese heirloom motif in this pink ceramic tile is known as Kuping Guling and, roughly translated, that means long ear or pig's ear in the Indonesian language.

Use it as a small feature tile, incorporate it into a mosaic, or just put it to work as a paper weight. You might even transform it into a piece of jewelry such as a pendant. It's application is limited only by your imagination.

I've seen one of these inlaid into the padded cover of a photo album and always thought they'd look great set into a scrapbook album in much the same way.

Handmade in Bali, Indonesia, the glaze on this run of tiles is cracked but you can turn that to your advantage to give them a vintage look. You'll see what I mean if you scroll through to my fourth photo.

It shows a tile to which I added a drop or two of Tim Holtz Vintage Photo Distress Ink. I rubbed the ink over the piece and then washed away the excess. It's a subtle effect that might change depending on what you colour it with. You could try soaking in the grains of your morning coffee.

BACK STORY
Kuping guling, or long ear, refers to the ear of the suckling pig, and is a Balinese heirloom motif. You can see the shape of the ear in each of the four segments set around the floral centre of this design.

It's a motif that you often see in art and architecture throughout the island.

Babi guling – roasted suckling pig – is probably Bali's most famous dish. Without doubt, it's a favourite of most Balinese.

It's generally reserved for ceremonial offerings. Once the essence of the offering has been given to the gods, then the food is shared with family and friends.

Babi – pigs – have a white cloth wound around their bellies on the holy day of Tumpek Kandang when the Balinese ritually honour and thank domestic animals for their service to humans. No animals can be slaughtered on this day.

When I stay in Bali, it's normally in Ubud, Bali's art and culture capital, and it's at a landmark restaurant called Ibu Oka's, just across from the Ubud Palace, that you can find some of Bali's best babi guling.
