Description

Civil War Gravestone Rubbing Maine Union General Hiram Burnham. "Died For The Union - General Hiram Burnham". 25" x 36 1/2" authentic gravestone rubbing. Hiram Burnham, born in Maine 1814, was a captain in the Aroostook War of 1839. He was a lieutenant colonel in the 6th Maine infantry in July 1861 and promoted to colonel in December 1861. He moved up the ranks and commanded a regiment and then a brigade in the Eastern Theater of the American Civil War. He participated in the Battle of Crampton's Gap and the Battle of Antietam, along with many other battles. He lost his life in the Battle of Chaffin's Farm near Fort Harrison, near Richmond, Virginia in 1864.
This original authentic rubbing of his gravestone is dramatic, bringing home the reality that in those times many laid down their lives for a cause they believed in. In very good shape, there are three very tiny holes on the paper that in no way detract from the image. Gravestone rubbings are made by rubbing a special colored wax over a soft paper, in this case a hand made paper, that is laid over the gravestone and the variations in the gravestone itself make this a difficult process that may cause some minor damage to the paper. Again these in no way effect the image. This rubbing would be very suitable for framing and would certainly interest any Civil War buff or veteran of current wars.
