Description

Indocalamus tessellatus

The Indocalamus tessellatus has by far some of the largest leaves on any bamboo plant in cultivation. Its large, oblong leaves can grow very large, up to 2′x4″. We love this plant here at our nursery. It makes an excellent container plant. The huge leaves fill in a container, spilling out over the sides. It can easily fit in any settings, whether you want an Asian, tropical, jungle or even a South Polynesian garden, this bamboo fitsinto most any garden design. The Indocalamus tessellatus is a large, mounding shrub that can grow between 4′-10′, depending on you climate. In its native habitat it is used as a food wrap, similar to how corn husks are used in the Americas for wrapping and cooking food. It naturally grows as an under story plant in shady areas, making it a good choice for a houseplant as well. Here in Southern Oregon, where we can get over 100°F, it can easily take full sun without any problems. When we hit record lows of 9°F for three nights straight in the winter of 2009-2010, we saw no damage to them what so ever, whether they were potted or in the ground.

Synonyms: Sasa tessellata, Arundinaria ragamowskii.
Height x Diameter: Ht. 10’x.5”.
Minimum temperature: Hardy to 0°F.
USDA zone 6-9.
Light: Part shade to full sun.
Culm: Green.
Uses: Container, shrub hedge, under story., crafts, house plant
Distribution: China.
Spread: Running.

We do not guarantee plants that perish due to customer neglect or factors outside our responsibility. The most common factors being: not watering a plant when necessary, extreme weather conditions such as heat and cold, plants that were not suitable for your climate.
Yellowing foliage from being in a box for up to a week is not uncommon. At times up to 50% yellowing can occur. Don't panic! It's not unusual. Your plant will eventually shed the yellow leaves. Bamboo goes through a few “growth spurts” from Spring through Fall. Your bamboo will add more foliage when it goes through its next period of growth. Water it what would be a normal rate for you area. Canes that have some damage from shipping may be cut back to just below the damage. This does not hurt bamboo and new shoots will emerge the next time your plant begins to put on new growth. Please use the Etsy messaging system if you have any questions about your plant when it arrives.
