This listing is for an antique replica of the famous Swiss Lion Of Lucerne Monument designed by Bertel Thoraldsen and hand hewn by Lucas Ahern in 1820-21.
It is a memorial to the mercenary soldiers from Switzerland who lost their lives in 1792 serving France's King Louis XVl during the French revolution, and is located in Lucerne, Switzerland.

This piece is unsigned.
It measures 7"w x 5 1/2"h x 4"d including protruding paw.
It is made of plaster and is substantial in weight at 2 lbs 1.2 oz.
2 chips to underneath corners. Some loss of silver paint in places.
Please view pictures and contact me if you need additional photos.
It is inscribed in latin "HELVETIORUM FIDEI AC VIRTUTI" which translate "To The Loyalty and Bravery of the Swiss".
Features a noble lion dying in his grotto with a broken spear protruding through it's shoulder,
his paw resting on the "lillies of Francs" with the Swiss shield in the background.

Mark Twain was quoted as saying when viewing this monument:
"The Lion of Lucerne is the most mournful and moving piece of stone in the world".
.....around and about are green trees and grass. The place is sheltered, reposeful woodland rock, remote from noise and stir and confusion- all fitting, for lions do die in such places. Not on granite pedestals in public squares fenced with fancy iron railings".

Included in this listing is a unique email I received from the curatorial assistant Karen Nystrom Simonsen from the Thoraldsen Museum, Copenhagen, Denmark after an inquiry I sent them about this piece in February of last year. Please view partial email in last picture.
The museum is actually retaining the pictures I sent them as a reference in case they come across additional information on a similar replica piece.

Beautiful one of a kind piece of artwork.
