A mid century modern 'Ikora' silver plate candle holder, with a marbled finish, and 3 removable bell-shaped cups - designed in 1961 by Kurt Radtke for renowned German tableware manufacturer, WMF.

A deceptively simple design, it would make an elegant centre-piece for a dining table or a sideboard, bringing a touch of European sophistication to a stylish modern home.

The Ikora range was first launched by WMF in the late 1920's, after perfecting a process for tinting metals - the name comes from an exotic, beautifully coloured Asian flower and was chosen to express the exclusive nature of this line of metalwork.

The design of the candle holder is influenced by the Bauhaus School in Weimar, Germany (1919-33) which combined the teaching of design, fine arts and craft, in the Modernist style. Radtke was a student of Wilhelm Wagenfeld, a noted 20th Century industrial designer who studied at the Bauhaus and later designed for WMF - this design is often accredited to him.

WMF, the Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik AG, or Melatware Factory of Württemberg, began life as a metal repair shop in 1853 - a merger with another German company, in 1880, resulted in the WMF name that, over the next 50 years, became famous for it's high quality domestic and art metal ware pieces.

The candle holder is in excellent vintage condition - some light scuffs around the cups and the ends of the legs, in keeping with its age, but nothing to detract.

There is a slightly golden tint to the metal which has its own charm but is probably not original - any of these designs I've previously seen have been clearly silver but also didn't have the marbled effect. Given the use of coloured tints by WMF, it's hard to tell! I leave it up to the purchaser to decide if they want to polish it up.

It has a 'WMF' mark to the underside of the main body and a further 'IKORA - Germany - Silver Plated' mark on the underside of one leg.

Measures: 16.5" long, 2" wide and 3.5" tall. The bell cups measure 2.75" dia. and take standard sized table candles. Weight: approx. 500g, unpacked.
