This beautiful gown is a unique piece of wearable art. It was the result of a challenge to make a garment from recycled/ upcycled denim jeans. I dove into the project with full gusto. I figured, go big or go home! I wanted to design a southern belle style gown with a bolero jacket and after a few months, I was incredibly pleased with the result. What I ended up with was 4 pieces.
The skirt is pretty heavy because of all the denim on it, so I figured to have a strapless look, I needed to separate the skirt and top. A corset seemed the most logical solution for the look I wanted. The skirt, like I said before, is rather heavy. So, my remedy for the weight was to make a wide waistband that would support the weight at the hips. It is surprisingly comfortable, similar to the wearing of a good backpack that distributes the weight. It has a zipper closure at the back. The edges are just left open and tend to fray, so you have to like the look.
The belt was my daughter in law's idea. Since I had all these pockets from the jeans, she thought I should make a belt made up of pockets! That also turned out awesome.
The corset is lined with a cotton fabric....obviously not from repurposed jeans....Just a nice soft blue pattern on a creamy background to compliment the corset.
The Jacket is also lined...but made of black fabric. I didn't have enough width of the blue to make the bolero and I thought the black was a beautiful contrast and finish to the costume. the arms are unfinished at the end so it matches the fraying look of the skirt.
As you can see in the photos, I have a "THIKK" hourglass shape. The dress fit me very nicely. The jacket was snug at the upper arm, but not unbearable. It is very warm though....keep that in mind when you choose to wear it. I kept it on for about an hour and then went without it under the warm April sunshine in Prescott Arizona.
The dress dimensions are as follows....
Length from waist to bottom: 31
Upper Arm: 14"
Arm Length: 23"
Weight: app 15 lbs
I am sure I will have forgotten something in my description. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact me. I appreciate that you took the time to take a look at my work. This dress is definitely a work from the heart. It is full of love. I enjoyed making it in spite of the occasional seam ripping session, broken needle and needle pricked finger.
I name every outfit that I create.
