Description

TMI: The main catalyst for the rusting process is water. Iron or steel structures might appear to be solid, but water molecules can penetrate the microscopic pits and cracks in any exposed metal. The hydrogen atoms present in water molecules can combine with other elements to form acids, which will eventually cause more metal to be exposed. If sodium is present, as is the case with saltwater, the corrosion is likely to occur more quickly. Meanwhile, the oxygen atoms combine with metallic atoms to form the destructive oxide compound. As the atoms combine, they weaken the metal, making the structure brittle and crumbly. http://www.wisegeek.org/what-is-rust.htm

BTW:I find rust fascinating- "Rust Never Sleeps" and I think I know the feeling. I have started making sea rust "beads" and pendants from rusted/corroded industrial metals found on the Northern California coast. The work is not that difficult but rather more time consuming: searching for "the piece," and then getting through the layers of dust, rust, flakes only to have a promising piece crumble in my hands as it was "too far gone." Oops, start over. The items in the "Rust Never Sleeps section are handcrafted rusted/corroded metal that was obviously something else once before it engaged in varying states of decay. I break each piece with my hands to get down to the rusty metal combined with sand and pebbles- until I can't break it any further. This does not mean all is OK since subsequent drilling can shatter brittle, not ready for prime time pieces. The final version of the bead or pendant is given a light coat of clear hypoallergenic finish so that the rust doesn't continue to flake and leave a red-brown calling card on you/your clothes. The "Rust Never Sleeps" section also includes recycled upcycled jewelry that I love to deconstruct and reconstruct into a new attitude. The section is a work in progress and new items will be added weekly.

"Sea Rustic" is an upcycled 21 inch necklace made of recycled beads: glass, metal, wood, anipay seeds, and little gemstones. The reversible pendant is sea rust and corrosion caught in the act of being itself and freeze framed in time (for a time) behind a clear coat of finish. The pendant measures 1in by 1.5 in by 0.5 in approx. One side shows rusted lines somewhat like petrified wood while the other side looks like a meteorite piece or lava stone with its collection of rust, sand, and pebbles. The bail is recycled copper wire. The necklace length can be changed if you would like a longer or shorter necklace/choker. Please convo desired measurements with payment or convo me with your custom ideas.

"Sea Rustic" ships USPS first class insured with delivery confirmation; to other countries via USPS First Class International.
