The secret society / fraternal brotherhood of “The Improved Order of Red Men” were originally founded in the early 1800’s, and its name was officially changed in 1834. Their rituals, regalia, and ceremonies are modeled after the Native Americans, and the order frequently uses Native American Imagery. This rare 3 piece medal is issue free and is in excellent vintage condition with no damage to report. Making this piece of fraternal history even more uncommon is the fact that the original presentation case is still with it. The impressive medal measures 4 ¼” long x 2 ½” across, and the folding case measures 5 1/8” x 2 7/8” when snapped closed.

The metal is untested and has no visible gold content markings, but based on experience I am quite sure that the medal is gold filled or at the very least heavily gold plated. The original antique case is faux black leather with red satin lining. Printed in gold on the inner top section of the folding case is the name “Federal Emblem Co. Camden, N.J.”. The case snaps securely shut, and is in excellent vintage condition with no damage to report.

The top piece of the medal consists of an eagle with its wings spread perched on a ribbon with the fraternal slogan F.F. &C. The middle features fraternal symbols etched into the center surrounded by phrases and mottos from the secret society in red, white and blue enameling. The border is a stylized Nouveau design. The bottom component features a copper metal Indian chief’s face at center with an ornate head dress; each of the individual feathers are inlaid with different colors of enamel. A peace pipe, rifle, tomahawk, and large knife lay across each other to form the bottom section.

This rare medal is one of the more obscure and hard to find pieces from the Improved Order of Red Men. The medal is in excellent vintage condition, and the enameling is full with no chips or cracks. The pin and clasp on the resverse side is fully operational and is in great shape.
