OTE4ECTBEHHAR BONHA Hammer & Sickle Russian "Great Patriotic War" Medal from local estate features bronze colored metal on front with red enamel and goldleaf lettering. Back is stamped with Russian language and numerals. It measures 1.75 inches from point to point across.

The Order of the Patriotic War (Russian: Орден Отечественной войны) is a Soviet military decoration that was awarded to all soldiers in the Soviet armed forces, security troops, and to partisans for heroic deeds during the German-Soviet War, known by the former-Soviet Union as the Great Patriotic War. The Order was established on May 20,1942 and came in first class and second class depending upon the merit of the deed. It was the first Soviet medal established during the war, and the first Soviet order divided by classes. Its statute precisely defined, which deeds are awarded with the order, e.g. shooting down three aircraft as a fighter pilot, or destroying two heavy or three medium or four light tanks, or capturing a warship, or repairing an aircraft under fire after landing on a hostile territory, and so on, were awarded with the first class. It was also given to some allied troops and commanders, including western allies. Additional medals were issued in 1985 to all surviving veterans of the Great Patriotic war in celebration of its 40th anniversary. This particular medal came in a box with a piece of cardboard that said "Checkpoint Charlie, 1993" (see last photo). Not sure what the significance of that is, or if it is related to the Berlin Wall at all. It would make a nice conversation piece or could be made into a pendant.

CONDITION: The pin shank is broken off. I think it originally would have had a small screw that went on the underside of a lapel to secure. That is missing as well. Enamel on one point has some damage (see the goldish stripes in photos).
