This Chalkware figure like others was made from a mold using plaster of Paris, otherwise referred to as Chalkware. It is in very good vintage condition, with the usual wear seen on pieces made in this fragile medium, and represented in the photos. Like string heads, this match holder not only would be considered decorative, but also functional. The space was made to house wooden matches next to the kitchen stove. Like stringheads, it hangs directly to the wall with an imbedded metal loop. He looks like someone who made his living on a large sea faring vessel. We discovered this salty sailor at an outdoor antique-flea market in the southeastern Indiana in the mid 80s. Chalkware, has become quite collectible. Now considered another genre of americana and folk art. We have included him in an ad hoc collection of other chalkware, including stringheads and faces, in our kitchen.

Measurements: 4.5" x 3" x 2.75"
