Elm Glazed Iron Painted Ladyslipper Dish

Description

This dessert or salad dish captures the exotic form of the pink ladyslipper, Cypripedium acaule, a native orchid of acidic northern forests, in simple brushwork. The lip has been given a series of elegant curves to frame the painting. Kohiki or dipped kaolin slip creates the light colored backdrop for the painting which uses a pulzerized native iron stone for a pigment. The lavender glaze is based on elm ash. Two currently available with minor variations in painting, glaze, and form, convo me for pictures of the exact piece you will receive.

Dimensions: about 6" x 6"x 2" high

Stamps near the foot are my signature chop and the St. John's Pottery Studio seal (where I made the piece).

This pieces is indigenous stoneware fired to ~2400°F. Fully functional and safe for food and beverages, it can even be used in ovens, dishwashers, and microwaves if you choose (avoid stovetops and direct flame).
