There are many editions available of the “Poetical Works of Robert Bridges – Excluding The Eight Dramas” but few are as beautiful as this 1913 edition published by the Humphrey Milford, Oxford University Press of London. It includes the following works by Bridges – Prometheus the Firegiver (A Mask in the Greek Manner), Demeter (A Mask), Eros and Psyche, The Growth of Love, Shorter Poems (Book I – V), New Poems, Later Poems, Poems in Classical Prosody and an Index of First Lines.

Robert Seymour Bridges (1844 – 1930) was an English poet who was never a very well-known poet and only achieved his great popularity shortly before his death, even though he was Poet Laureate from 1913 to 1930. He was a doctor by training, intending to practice until the age of forty and then retire to write poetry. Lung disease forced Bridges to retire in 1882 and from that point on he devoted himself to writing and literary research. He poems reflect a deep Christian faith and he is also the author of many well-known hymns.

Condition: Bound in dark green textured calf leather with gold gilt initials on the cover and title on the spine. Front and rear boards have rounded corners with no edgewear and only a few white spots to the front cover and upper spine. The spine is straight, binding is tight, and hinges are sound with no cracking to the beautiful marbled endpapers. Text block is solid with gold gilt along all of the page edges with all pages firmly attached. Tissue guard intact over the frontispiece image of the author. Age tanning throughout. Previous owner inscription on the reserve of front free endpaper. All internal pages are clean, with no tears and no other previous owner marks. 472 pages including the index of first lines Dimensions: H – 7-1/4” W – 5”
