Original, beautifully detailed antique engraving of mercenary pikemen from the 15th and 16th century.

Landsknechte were European, predominantly German and Swiss mercenary pikemen and supporting foot soldiers from the late 15th to the late 16th century, and achieved the reputation for being the universal mercenary of early modern Europe. The term is from German Land (land or country) and Knecht (servant), recorded from ca. 1480. It was originally coined by Peter von Hagenbach and intended to indicate soldiers of the Swabian part of the Holy Roman Empire as opposed to the Swiss mercenaries. As early as 1500, the misleading spelling of Lanzknecht became common because of the association with Lanze "lance".

The size of the print: 9,6" x 6,3" (24,5 x 16 cm) including its border.
Printed in 1904, Bibliographisches Institut Leipzig, Germany as an illustration for the 6th edition of "Meyers' Konversations Lexikon".

The print is in good condition and the paper shows its age with creamy patina, perfect for framing.

Concerning the age of the paper - cca. 110 years - some spots can be occured on the margin and the reverse side, but these do not effect the quality of the print itself as it can be seen on the scan.

Please note, that by antique prints due to their age some imperfections are to be expected.
