This giant bromeliad is amazing. Its intense blue color is difficult to believe - luminous, metallic turquoise, a color you might paint a race car. Plus it has bright orange stamens.

The large clumping rosettes of spiky foliage are handsome year round in a desert garden. Then comes a 5' tall flower spike that explodes with metallic blue blossoms. Hummingbirds love them and the branches provide convenient perches.

Native to Southern Chile, Puya alpestris thrives in zones 9-11, is utterly drought tolerant, hardy to 20-25° F.

Surface sow the tiny seeds on the top of a sandy medium and keep warm. Germination can be erratic, but these tiny seeds come through.

If you are intimidated by TINY seeds, this may not be the plant for you.

Germination instructions are at SmartSeedstore.info.

We suggest starting seeds in a cactus mix that includes sand/perlite/vermiculite mix. Water soil mix and let drain. Surface sow seeds, and a sprinkling of soil mix over seeds, use a spray bottle to keep soil moist but not soaking wet. You don't want to water with a direct stream, as this can dislodge the seeds and bury them too deeply to germinate. Cover your pot with plastic wrap and place in a warm/sunny location. Remove plastic wrap when you have seedlings. Please be patient! Seeds can take 4-6 weeks to sprout in ideal conditions. Move seedlings to a spot with bright, indirect light.

I ordered plant & got 15 tiny seeds!

Response from Jamille

Hello Sandra, We don’t sell plants. The name of our company is Smart Seeds Emporium. The listing clearly states that you were getting 15 Seeds. There’s even a photo of the seeds next to a coin for scale. I don’t know of a company that’s going to send you a live plant for only $3.69 shipping. A USPS first class stamp that covers up to 4 ounces is $3.69. If you find a company that will send you a live plant via priority mail for cheap then you definitely should buy it. In the interim I would suggest reading the item description more carefully and paying attention to the name of the company as well.
