Wood Fired Dessert Plate/ Salad Plate/ Dish

The vivid central halo in this dessert or salad dish was created by masking it with another pot during the firing process. This channels the flame around the piece creating a dynamic color pattern framed by the elegant curves of the rim. Glossy areas are thick accumulations of melted ash.

I made the piece from clay dug in St. Cloud area of Minnesota. The rich, organic colors and patterns you see are created by the unique clay mineralogy interacting with flame, wood ash, and water vapor over the course of a 10 day firing. It was fired in the Johanna Kiln at the St. John's Pottery.

Dimensions: about 7" x 7" x 2" high

This piece is indigenous stoneware fired to ~2400°F. Fully functional and safe for food and beverages, it can also be used in ovens, dishwashers, and microwaves if you choose (avoid stovetops and direct flame).
