Description

The full size, #1 signed copy of this work, was just acceped by Museo Fracescano di Roma for their permanent collection. These signed prints are slightly smaller at 16" x 20"

The inspiration for this piece, and my entire Grace and Grit series came while sitting by the courtyard of Trinity Church in Boston, and viewing this statue of St. Francis.

I was going through a rough time in my life, and moments like that brought me solace. I had the realization, that Saints, Gurus, Buddhas, and other spiritual and heroic figures, are almost always portrayed in pristine environments, but when they had their realizations and experiences that lead us to revere them today, life really wasn't so clean and pristine, it was probably quite the contrary. So, in some respects, I feel that portraying them that way today, could be considered a sort of spiritual dishonesty, that sets false expectations for people. You can find peace, you can find your center, despite the greatest suffering and chaos around you. With the Grace and Grit series, I try to portray that calm center found in spiritual realization, but with the honest grit of reality back in the picture.

The original statue that this work is based on is about a block away from where the Boston Marathon bombings occurred, and it now has an additional layer of meaning for me. I
This limited signed work is 16" x 20". The signature is ground into the back of the work.
