Item details

Vintage from the 19th century

Brass, Bronze

AA53 - Ankle Bracelet Currency, Origin Unknown, 5" Diameter, Silver Alloy, patina from age. This surprisingly heavy and decidedly old bracelet is one of the finer examples of this type. I have found it in several books which show it worn above the elbow on the upper bicep. Another photo shows it worn above the ankle. These men are emaciated from an American view point. None of use could get our hands through it. Throughout much of West and North Africa bracelets such as this are a sign of wealth and prestige, are worn as ornaments, and were used as currency for rare but important transactions. Notice the worn though elaborate geometric etching. Good condition though somewhat worn. Old, but an important piece with a lot of history behind it.
