A picture is worth 1000 words - especially when the words are emblazoned on the patriotic Civil War era frame! For your consideration is an 1860s photograph of a young man encased in its original golden keepsake frame. Although the man pictured is not shown in uniform, the layout of the photo in the case makes it very clear that this guy was a Southern sympathizer!

Although it is difficult to see in the photographs, the golden frame has the words "The Union Now And Forever." embossed around the photo's edge with patriotic flags, cannons, swords, drums, and cannonballs adorning the corners. The unique thing about this photo is that the patriotic frame is upside down in the case. This was a very popular way during the Civil War era to display your loyalties to the other side when using any (more readily available) Union created items. Confederate soldiers were also known for turning battlefield-captured US belt buckles upside down when wearing them to clearly depict what side they were fighting for! (Conveniently the upside-down US buckle looks like "Sn" when inverted and soldiers of the South said this stood for "Southern nation" or other variations of the same meaning).

This picture would look great in any period collection or on display as a conversation starter in your home. Keep history alive and let the story of this young man live on to intrigue future generations of history lovers!

Please review the pictures regarding the condition of this piece. The case is in good condition overall with only a few scuffs and tears in the fabric-covered outer layer which are visible in the pictures. The case also has an ornate design on the back and original locking hasp, although they are not visible in the attached images. The frame, glass, and photograph are in excellent condition which is rare for most photographs of this era. Both the image itself and the patriotic design are sharp and display well. The fantastic shape of the photo gives providence to the Southern origination of this piece since these antique images will quickly deteriorate when removed from their cases and handled. This is a very fine example of an original photo and patriotic frame from the era and would make a great addition to any collection.

Thanks for looking and have a great day!! Be sure to check out my other items!!
