This is a great Civil War era "cavalry" soldier's tin cup. Tin cups were used by soldiers on both sides during the Civil War. They were a staple of every soldier's haversack since they could be used for drinking, eating, boiling, heating, and cooking. This particular cup, also referred to as a "cavalry" cup by collectors, is distinguishable by its larger size and single band running around the circumference of the cup. This larger cup was more suitable for cooking and eating out of and the band running around the middle supposedly added strength to the cup. Both of these features would be ideal for cavalry soldiers since they needed dual-purpose items that would take up less space in their packs and could survive a beating while riding long hours in rough conditions. Because of this, and the fact that several of these identical cups were directly documented and attributed to cavalry soldiers during the war, cups of this nature often go by this term.

This is an outstanding example of a true period piece. This great cup has all the distinguishing features of tinware of the era including the lead soldered seams and a completely flat bottom. While I would love to see this cup get back out on the trail, I would consider using this cup as a rustic conversation piece or a wonderful addition to any period collection.

Please review the pictures regarding the condition of this piece. The cup is in great condition overall with only a few minor rust spots here and there. The patina is outstanding and the marks from use at the bottom of the cup only add to its character and authenticity. The cup also holds liquid as it was as originally intended to do so. This is a very fine example of a tin "cavalry" cup from the Civil War era and would make a great addition to any collection.

Thanks for looking and have a great day!! Be sure to check out my other items!!
