The cloth face has been hand drawn and needle-sculpted with applied eyelids giving a three dimensional effect. The face has been coloured using a combination of artist quality pencils and powders to create a soft look that has been sealed so that her face remains lovely over time. The doll has been made with a unique separate neck to give the doll an expressive quirk to her head. The hands which hold a fan look all the more realistic because of the use of an opposable thumb.
The period costume inspired by crinoline-mad fashions of the 1860’s is full of surprises. Each point on the doll’s overskirt can be looped up and hung from a bead, either to create a different look or to mark the passing of each day before Christmas, thereby revealing the lining underneath and creating a whole new look for the doll in the lead up to the holidays. The doll’s very special hat also holds a surprise and is the means of marking another day in the countdown to Christmas. The doll’s hat has a hinged crown so that on one of the days of Advent, you can flip the crown of the hat forward and reveal some fantastic marabou trim hidden inside – talk about flipping your lid! While the final surprise to mark the last day of Advent is unveiled by opening the fan to reveal the message “Merry Christmas”. The days on the Advent calendar are marked with small brass number charms showing you which point to loop up to the orange bead above it.
Even the small details of this doll have been given special attention, such as the fully wired crinoline and bloomers with lace trim. The shoes are made of silk (to match the overskirt and bodice) and have a leather sole. The lace jabot at the doll's throat would have been very fashionable in the 1860's as would the large bow at the centre back of the ombre sash at the waist. The hair is a beautiful brown mohair that has been gathered into a net at the nape of the neck.
If you choose to bring this doll into your home, she will be sent to you in a corrugated cardboard box complete with unpacking and posing instructions so that she arrives in the best condition possible.
Please note that this doll is not a toy, but is meant as a decorative item only. The loops that hang off the beads to mark each day of Advent are delicate and so need to be treated with care.
