This elegant solid walnut chanukiah is a modern take on an ancient tradition. This original design is meticulously handcrafted from solid walnut, with solid brass candle cups. The gently flowing lines have a sleek contemporary feel while evoking the curved shape and raised central shamash of a traditional menorah.

This candelabra holds 8 candles plus a 9th “helper” candle, the shamash, on a slightly raised holder in the center.
Candles are lit progressively on each of the 8 nights of Hanukkah, celebrating this traditional Jewish Festival of Lights.

This sleek design fits with any decor and works equally well on a credenza, mantle or entryway table at any time of the year.

I start by selecting beautiful pieces of walnut for the body and base. I first cut and plane them to the required size and thickness and then cut the joinery that will produce a strong perfect interlocking fit between the body and the base. I then use a bandsaw to cut the pieces to their rough curved shape. After smoothing them with various power sanding tools, I switch to hand sanding with progressively finer grits (and a lot of elbow grease!) until I achieve a silky smooth surface with no sharp edges. After gluing the body and base together I protect the menorah with several coats of hard wax oil. The final step is adding the solid brass candle cups which are screwed into pre drilled holes for maximum strength.

This item includes the walnut menorah with 9 brass candle cups to fit standard Chanukah candles (5/16” diameter). Candles are not included.

I just love walnut because each piece of wood is so unique and expressive. The grain patterns and colours are a witness of the tree’s history and growth, as well as the board’s location in the tree. Boards near the outside of the tree have a mix of the darker heartwood and the lighter sapwood (most recent growth). Boards near branches or knots often show unique swirling grain patterns. I stabilize any visible knots or cracks with resin.

I don’t rephotograph each piece I make, so unless you happen to be the first buyer for a new design, you will not get the exact piece in the listing photos. If you would like to see the exact piece you will receive, please message me before ordering, and I will be happy to take a picture for you.

A wooden candle holder or menorah is a bit more delicate than metal. The wax itself won’t do any damage, in fact the walnut is finished with a “hardwax oil” (mixture of penetrating oils and wax). The important thing is not to use a knife or other metal tool to scrape off wax, since that will scratch it. It’s safer to just use a fingernail, the edge of a credit card, or those little plastic tabs from bread bags. For stubborn blobs of wax, you can gently soften them with a hairdryer on low heat (don’t try to actually melt the wax, though!). After removing the wax, you can even out the sheen if necessary by buffing with a piece of brown paper bag (it works like an extremely gentle abrasive, in fact it’s the last step I use on all my items).

This menorah is perfect! It is well-crafted and solid, with an absolutely flawless finish. The piece is one of a kind and clearly handmade; the stain is slightly different on each side in such a lovely way. I had been searching for just the right menorah for some time, and I could not have asked for a more beautiful piece. Additionally, Doris was a pleasure — she went above and beyond in reaching out to ask which stain I preferred in the batch that she was working on before sending our menorah out, and she sent a personalized thank you note with it.
