General information:
-Fresh seeds harvested in June 2026
-D. Capensis Wide-Leaf is a South African carnivorous plant. This variety has a wider leaf and a slightly larger pink flower than the “typical red”, narrow leaf capensis” (last two pictures are comparison of typical and wide leaf Capensis).
Sowing seeds:
-Seeds easily germinate.
-No cold stratification needed to germinate seeds
-Sow seeds evenly dispersed right on top of wet carnivorous plant soil.
**Do not bury seeds**
-Place pot or container in a bright, warm location, like a windowsill, under grow lights, or a partly sunny location. Early morning or late afternoon direct sunlight is OK.
-Try to avoid the scorching hot middays direct sunlight.
-Keep soil wet at all times.
-Faster germination time and success rate with temperatures ranging from 65-80 degrees Fahrenheit.
-Seeds can take 2-6 weeks to germinate, or slightly longer, depending on the growing conditions.
-Optional, you can transplant seedlings when they’re about hone inch tall and have at least 2 to 3 carnivorous leaves.
Mature Plant Care:
Light:
-No Dormancy Required.
-Mature plants can grow in full to part sun, on a sunny/bright windowsill, patio, porch, or under grow lights for 10 to 16 hours.
-This plant has not flowered for me when grown under grow lights.
Water:
-It’s always recommended to water with rain, distilled, or reverse osmosis water. Soft water with 50ppm or less is OK to use.
-Keep soil wet at all times.
-Easiest to sit pot in a dish or tray with water 1/4 to 2 inches high, or water daily.
-Plants can grow indoors year-round.
-Outdoors plants, can die down to soil level when temperatures get to cold, and regrowing in the spring when temperatures are favorable again.
-Protect roots in the winter from deep repeated freezing.
