'The Beauties of Clarendon' is an anthology of extracts on history and morality by Edward Hyde, 1st Earl of Clarendon. Edited by Alfred Howard, the pieces include biographies and stories about notable figures of English history including the Earl of Carnarvon, the Duke of Buckingham and Oliver Cromwell, as well as work extolling the virtues of humility, friendship and patience.
The book itself features exquisite hand-tooled brown leather covers to front and rear, each with an ornate debossed design and gilt patterned edge. The equally beautiful banded spine also features debossed decorations and the book's title imprinted in a darker panel, although it is quite hard to read. The edges of the text block are delicately marbled but the vibrancy has been reduced by aging to the paper. The spine is intact and the binding is firm, although there is light splitting to the very top of the external spine edges. The overall condition of the covers is excellent considering the book's age, with normal wear to the edges and corners, as well as sunning to the front and rear along the mid-line.
Internally, the end papers are intact to the front and rear, and they consist of striking hand-marbled heavyweight paper. Inside the front cover is a binder's label for Campbell's Bible Depository, Edinburgh. The second front end paper bears an ink inscription, which is a little hard to read but appears to be in the name "John Ashton Cowan, Peterhouse, Cambridge, MCMXLV" (dating the inscription to c.1945). There is a monochrome engraved frontispiece opposite the title page, which includes a portrait of Clarendon himself. The main text pages are somewhat yellowed but in generally fantastic condition, free from rips, marks and stains, although there are a very few areas of annotation scattered throughout the book. Overall, this is a beautiful, luxuriously bound piece, and given its remarkable condition for a book of its age, was clearly a most treasured possession.
