I've been saving Antique & Vintage Flatware from the local Scrap Metals Dealer's Melting Pot, & repurposing them into all sorts of things...this is just one example of my efforts. It's what's commonly called a "Roach Clip", & it's handy for holding all sorts of small items...
I have several available, this one's five & 1\/2 inches long, & made from a Vintage Sterling Silver Spoon handle that had an Egyptian Lotus design. The ornate handle is very sturdy, 21mm across at its' widest, 6 & 1\/4 inches long (25mm = 1 in). This pretty handle features a beautiful Egyptian Lotus design on BOTH sides. The symetrical Art Nouveau Floral design is perfectly balanced. There's an 14mm x 21mm oval of Silver, inlaid with Niello, that closes the gap between the ends when slid up the shaft. The slide has an amazingly detailed relief of Ganesh! This Sterling Silver slide is inlaid with a metallic Black compound called Niello. The traditional technique for this unusual substance is as follows: The artisan would carve a particular character or pattern into the silver, ornamenting the work by means of engraving the metal with a tool, after which they filled up the hollows produced by the tool with a black enamel made of silver, lead and sulfur. The resulting design, called Niello, was of much higher contrast and thus much more visible. He would then use the Niello inlay to fill in the "background". After being baked in an open fire, the alloy would harden. It would then be sanded smooth and buffed. Finally, a silver artisan would add minute details by hand.

The Niello inlay in this case is a true Silvery\/Black color, like the stone Hematite. It is ABSOLUTELY PERFECT, no gaps, cracks, dings, dents, or damage of any sort. This item is PERFECT, any ripples, dents, or inconsistencies you think you see are merely reflections.

These useful clips make great gifts! (Make sure you ask for clip #8!!!) Thanks for looking, & please take a look at my other work!
