Since I was rapidly becoming the “Lighting King” to all my friends, I started to experiment with all sorts of lighting designs. Lamps that I went a little nuts over were the old motion lamps of the 50’s, that over the last several years have been making a resurgence. While the concepts have not been particularly interesting, the magic of the heat of the light bulb causing an inner cylinder to spin and create a pattern or some simple motion still holds a warm fascination for most of us.

After getting the technique of building these things down, my brain started to reel with the possibilities of what they could do. Once such concept was the idea of Paper Doll motion lamps. A figure slowly rotates from outfit to outfit. I went to one of my favorite places in LA, the Soap Plant, and picked up several books of Paper Doll Figures. Jackie “O.” The Kennedys. And Marilyn Monroe was a must.

Having written a film called “Calendar Girl” (check me out on the IMDB.com for my film credits), I had a certain passion for Marilyn. So she became my first Paper Doll motion lamp. Marilyn in her underwear moving from outfit to outfit. It was just plain old fun when it got up and running. And no sooner had I finished it, then it was wisked away by my little sister to her house where it sits in her kitchen still. Everyone who sees it wants to know where they can get one. Well, now I have an answer for them . . . Etsy.

As with most of my stuff, please keep in mind that I can do other custom Paper Doll lamps as well. It may be something I have in my library of images or something you submit. For now, please enjoy the Marilyn Paper Doll motion lamp. If you’d like to it in motion, I do have a short MPEG I can email to you. I would be more than happy to send it.

If you have any other questions, please don’t hesitate to start a conversation with me. We have no idea where such exchanges may lead. Thanks for checking in. Your faithful pal, Paul W.
