Okay, okay, we admit it. Nothing gets the day started like a nice cup of joe. Even here at Tea Noir, where tea is elevated to cultlike obsession, we do like our coffee. It's just rich and aromatic and full of that caffeinated goodness.

There's a new kid in town, though, and it's called Mocha Mate.

This blend mixes roasted, toasted yerba mate with full-bodied chicory and delicious natural cocoa, kisses it with a hint of cinnamon, and serves up an unforgettable cup.

This is a wonderful, aromatic, full-bodied brew that goes down incredibly smoothly - never any bitterness, no matter how long you steep it. It really does taste like the best cafe mocha you've ever had, with absolutely no acidity or harshness like you get with coffee.

So what is this yerba mate stuff, anyway? Well, mate is a traditional South American herb that's a great alternative to normal teas. When it's simply dried, it's herbal and grassy, a little like the best green tea you've ever tasted.

When it's roasted, like in Mocha Mate, though, mate is toasty and rich - kind of like coffee! Yerba mate is incredibly smooth, without a trace of bitterness even when it's brewed super-strong. Trust us, you're going to love mate at first sip!

Like coffee, yerba mate packs a punch, for those times you need to stay awake. While some folks claim that mate's wallop comes from a chemical other than caffeine, that's not true - mateine, the active ingredient, is just a chemical synonym for caffeine.

However, many people notice that they don't get jittery from mate the way they do from coffee. It's an intense buzz, but a much gentler one.

Mocha Mate brews up a rich, smooth, and fragrant cup. The brew is VERY cloudy, thanks to the natural cocoa mixed liberally with the mate leaves, but don't worry! It'll taste great - it's just not as pretty in the pot or cup as some of our other brews. There will also be a bit of sediment at the bottom of your cup - you can swirl this up with the last sip and drink it (the dregs are delicious and nutritious, too - mate is packed with vitamins and other beneficial compounds) or just try reading your future in the cocoa and leaves!

It's great plain, but a hint of cream and sugar takes this drink to whole new levels of deliciousness.

This listing is for 4 ounces of loose-leaf tisane, which will come to you in our signature resealable black pouch - it's more space-efficient than a tin, and keeps your new artisan teas just as fresh. You'll need a teapot or other infuser to brew this tea, unless you like leaves on the bottom of your cup.

4oz of loose leaf tea will brew up into 40-50 cups of tea, for a cost of less than 15 cents per cup! While most yerba mate can be re-brewed several times, we don't recommend brewing more than two cups from any serving of Mocha Mate. Because of the chicory and cocoa, the drink will get less intense and chocolatey with repeat brewings - kinda defeats the purpose, don't you think?

Keep in mind, though, that you should never let wet leaves sit for too long - although good (dry) tea like ours has a shelf life up there with uranium, wet leaves are little bacterial playgrounds. If you have to walk away from the pot for more than an hour or so before rebrewing, consider ditching the leaves and starting again to be safe.
