Tablet weaving PDF pattern series, vol. #1 - Hallstatt 186-inspired pattern
You need 31 tablets and yarn in 3 or 4 colours. An inkle loom is not necessary!
Revised in June 2026.

Based on a rare Early Iron Age tablet-woven textile from the Hallstatt salt mines, this pattern translates an archaeological find into a fully workable modern draft.

Level 2 (intermediate): You should be comfortable with 20+ tablets and turning each of them individually.

The PDF file contains 15 pages with
- a brief overview of textiles unearthed in the salt mines of Hallstatt, present-day Austria;
- a tablet weaving pattern inspired by one of the Hallstatt finds - the band catalogued as Halltext 186;
- threading and weaving instructions, as well as different turning sequence notations (as I know every weaver writes and reads patterns differently).

What you need to start: yarn, a set of at least 31 four-hole square tablets, and patience :)
YOU DO NOT NEED AN INKLE LOOM.

You will learn:
- how to thread the cards for the presented pattern,
- what "S" and "Z" card positions mean,
- how card rotation works,
- how to read the pattern step by step.

Beautiful booklet, covering the history of the pattern, basic principles of tablet weaving and an excellent and versatile pattern. Moreover, Emilia has the best helpdesk ever, responding to messages quickly and she answered all my questions. Absolutely brilliant! I can highly recommend pattern and seller.
