Helpful tips for planting Echinacea:
Plant anytime the ground isn’t frozen. Fall-Spring planting, if the plant has been growing naturally outdoors, then it is OK to plant anytime. If the plant was growing in a greenhouse, then wait until after the last frost. In the Summer, transplant anytime there isn’t extreme weather, excessive heat or drought conditions. When digging up a plant in the yard, make sure not to shake all the dirt off the root ball as this unnecessary stress on the plant. When dividing it is best to monitor water carefully for the first 10 to 14 days.
Where to plant:
Choose a location with full or partial sun and well-drained soil. They prefer nutrient rich soil however they will live in poor, Sandy, infertile soils. Echinacea can grow in borders, fields, gardens, mixed containers and pots.
How to plant:
Dig a hole that's twice as wide and slightly deeper than the root ball. Important to plant in loose soil. Remove pot, knock and squeeze as needed, sometimes it’s necessary to cut the pot off if super well rooted. Spread and loosen the bottom-middle roots, drop in hole, and fill in with soil until the top of the roots is level with the soil. Space plants 12-36” apart, depending on the variety as the have different habits. It is essential there is adequate air circulation and room to grow. Water thoroughly after planting. This is also a good time to add in slow release granular fertilizer or use a liquid feed a day after initial watering.
Maintenance:
Echinacea are low-maintenance perennials that are critter, deer, rabbit and drought resistant. This hardy perennial will continue to bloom, especially when expired blossoms are trimmed. This will also encourage more flowers to bloom. They can be divided every 3-5 years if they outgrow their space or you want to change the look of your garden. These divisions can be planted back into the garden or a container of your choice.
