This listing is for a gorgeous Italian midcentury modern Fantoni ceramic drip glaze vase. This short neck, gourd shaped pottery vase was made by the Italian Master Ceramicist, Marcello Fantoni, and was made in Florence, Italy most likely in the 1960's or 1970's. The complex glazing of the vase is thick, textured, and glassy in beautiful Persian turquoise blue with speckled white underglaze that shows through. The inside of the neck and the base are glazed in the same speckled white glaze. The vase is hand signed "Fantoni Italy " on the base. The vase measures approximately 4-1/4 inches in diameter at its widest point and stands approximately 7-1/8 inches tall. The mouth of the vase is 1-3/4 inches in diameter. The vase is in very good used vintage condition consistent with age and use and has no cracks, chips, or repairs. There is some crazing in the glaze that appears to be inherent to this type of thick glazing. This is really a lovely small piece of Italian art pottery by a Master Ceramicist that will make a great addition to your growing Italian pottery collection and a true conversation piece.

Born in Florence Italy in 1915, Marcello Fantoni was a sculptor, ceramicist, designer and metalworker. He studied at the Art Institute in Florence, where Libero Andreotti and Bruno Innocenti were his sculpting professors and Gianni Vagnetti was his figurative art professor. He opened the Fantoni Ceramic Studio in 1936 and his work is known for combining the ancient Italian pottery techniques with Modernist elements. His production of edition and unique pieces meets a great success from 1937 with the Arts and Crafts exhibition that made him well-known throughout all the country and beyond. His success grew in the 1960’s and 1970’s and his unique sculptures adopted both a very contemporary aesthetic but with historical references, such as the Etruscan ceramics. The overriding principle in Fantoni’s varied body of work was that his ceramics should have “…the simplicity of a beautiful color on a well-studied form”. Later in life, Fantoni founded the International School of Ceramic Art and began teaching. Upon his death in 2011, one newspaper called him "the master of beauty". Today, his pieces are part of the most important museum collections, such as The Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and the Tokyo’s Museum of Modern Art.
