A turned box of segmented Mahogany wood, with a lid of Bigleaf Maple Burl wood, to stash away those little pieces of jewelry or other treasured items.
Segmented woodturning is a process of cutting wedge-shaped pieces of wood at precise angles, and gluing those pieces into a ring. Multiple rings are created, then stacked and glued together to create a blank, which is then turned to shape on the lathe. It is a time consuming process, but it allows an infinite range of effects and patterns to be created. This is how the body of the box was made.
In contrast, the snug-fitting Bigleaf Maple Burl wooden lid is a touch of pattern and beauty that only nature can create.
Even the fragrance of the Mahogany is a treat.
The box is 3-1/4 inches tall, 4-1/4 inches in diameter.
The finish is multiple coats of tung oil, buffed with hard wax to a satin sheen.
