Description

A mandala is a schematic depiction of a deity. The deity in the sacred space is a direct reference to the presence of the divine in our world. The mandala is used for meditation.
The deity Chakrasamvara is situated at the middle of this thangka with his consort Vajravarahi. Chakrasamvara is also known as Heruka. He is usually depicted in the yab-yum position, blue-colored with four faces and twelve arms.
Chakrasamvara is a yidam (wrathful deity), popular in Tibet, Mongolia and Nepal. Chakrasamvara and Vajravarahi embody the esoteric knowledge of Tantric Yoga. They are here surrounded by 24 deities and four gates. Outside this ring we find many other aspects of Buddhism, both peaceful and wrathful. At the top we see the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, while Mahakala is at the bottom.
