"Hoochie Mamas Try on Hats" is a 8.5"h x 14"w painting on torn-edge cotton twill cloth, made with fabric paint, hand brushed and also applied with airpen (black fabric paint for lines and writing). You can see the other Hoochie Mamas paintings in the second photo above, but this item is only the one painting, about trying on hats.

This is one of a set of six little Hoochie Mamas paintings I made in May, 2013, after one of my Turtle Art Camp students kept suggesting Hoochie Mamas as a theme for the day, in our weeklong time together here at my house. At the end of the camp, she asked me to make her a little painting commission, with the theme of ... Hoochie Mamas. So I made six little paintings of these feisty women enjoying doing everyday things together, in their high spirited, full of life way. She picked "Hoochie Mamas Bake Some Pies," and the rest of these paintings are here on etsy now, exactly one month after I finished making them all.

This is a one of a kind, original painting, not a print. The pieces in this series are all drawn and painted on cloth and are not sewn, stretched, or framed. They are just on flat, medium weight cotton twill cloth, with soft, torn edges.

The Hoochie Mamas have a blast together, especially when they take off and go do some crazy fun thing like trying on hats. They ALWAYS have fun just being together. Wig heads, other girlfriends who couldn't come along today, and some roses and big eyes float around them, while they advise each other on what looks best with their faces, and Libby, my dog, thinks they ought to realize SHE wants to try on some hats, too. It's about more fun than any pile of Hoochie Mamas can stand! So they brought their Box Merlot along, to settle their nerves, if necessary ... or not necessary!

The term "hoochie mamas" is a pretty widely defined slang expression in our culture. For MY purposes, I use it as a high-spirited name for feisty women who are fun-loving and nurturant. I use this edgy term as a feminist choice to describe women who celebrate the joy of life, especially when they get together.

If you have some really wonderful girlfriends you would enjoy doing anything with, just since it's that much fun being with them, then you know what I mean about Hoochie Mamas, and you ARE one! If you don't have some hoochie girlfriends, get yourself out there and find some. They will help you get through the nasty stuff in life and keep your spirits up! They know how to whoop it up with you, when things are great, too! Be Feisty Under Pressure, no matter what's up!

I use eyes a lot in my work! They ARE the windows to our souls, and we can use a lot more of that direct soul connection, if you ask me.

I've been painting since I was little, and my career has been about large story pieces with writing all over the narrative imagery. I've focused a lot on whole cloth sewn paintings, but for Etsy, I'm emphasizing my small drawings, paintings, and prints.

I retain all copyrights on all of my works and their images.

Thanks! - Lucky, Susan Shie
